The Department of English has come a long way since the establishment of the college in 2007. Initially existing only as a department catering to the General Course of Curriculum in the old 1+1+1 format, the Honours Course was introduced in 2018 with the new CBCS curriculum taking centre stage in the University of Calcutta.Initially, the Department of English had been granted 10 seats (Inclusive of all the Categories) which now, with the introduction of the EWS, has risen to 12.

The Department has faced many obstacles in the past 5/6 years but with the support of the Administration and the tireless effort of the faculty members, it has only grown from strength to strength. Welcoming students, who for the most part are first generation college goers, the department has sought to identify the potential in all of them, taking greater care in trying to put across the complexities of the syllabus and the marking schemes and prepare the interested candidates for life in the University post their graduation. Needless to say, these efforts have reaped rewards. Our students are now pursuing their Masters in Diamond Harbour Women’s University and Sanskrit University. And we can only hope that their success story will serve as an inspiration for the future generation of students taking admission in our college.

Infrastructural Facilities

• The department has a growing library for the benefit of the students, with efforts being taken to increase the number of books for the Departmental Students.
• An online database ( N-List) for browsing through important and relevant journals and critical material on texts is there for the students.

• The Departmental Students are encouraged to submit their creative work to the College Magazine.
• The students of the department are encouraged to participate and attend special lectures and seminars which address relevant themes around texts included in their syllabus.
• The students also take active part in the National Service Scheme (NSS) of the college.

Activities of the Department

• The students also participate in seminars and workshops organized by different institutions to be aware of the latest academic and technical issues related to the syllabus of the English Honours.
• Students participate in sports and cultural activities organized by the college.
• The Department looks to start organising Teacher exchange programs in collaboration with other Educational Institutions.
• The teaching faculty of the department is actively pursuing research with publications with houses like Orient Blackswan and Routledge amongst others.

Job Prospect

• Many students pursue higher studies and complete their post-graduation.
• A few of our department are presently serving in various private sectors such as healthcare and marketing.
