In 2019, Shirakole Mahavidyalaya inaugurated its Department of Sociology, commencing its journey towards offering a Bachelor of Arts degree in General. This programme has since been successfully imparting the necessary education and skills to students in this field.
Sociology is a scientific discipline that delves into the intricacies of human social existence, including social change, and the underlying causes and effects of human behavior. Sociologists analyze the structure, organization, and operation of social groups, organizations, and societies. This field encompasses a wide range of topics, from the dynamics of family relationships to the functioning of large-scale social institutions such as governments, corporations, and religious organizations. It also explores the sociology of work, culture, sports, and leisure, as well as the dynamics of deviance and social control. Overall, sociology is an indispensable area of study for comprehending the complexities of the social world we inhabit.
COURSE & PROGRAMME
The Department offers a B.A. general course in Sociology that is affiliated with Calcutta University. Until 2023, the course followed the CBCS programme prescribed by the university. Presently, the Department is following the CCF programme as per the new education policy 2020 prescribed by Calcutta University.
The department has organized many academic activities for the development of students. Basic features of this Department are Student oriented approach which is achieved through adopting student centric teaching- learning practices. The Department has implemented many activities for the development of students like: inauguration of Social sciences forum, field visit, group discussion, wall papers, seminar, workshop etc. In the classroom teaching our focus is on student’s academic progress as well as their personality development with various social skills.
